On Thursday Henley Fire Service were out helping the Red Lion Hotel empty the water where it was near their electrical system. The Angel on the Bridge pub’s terrace was flooded and the river came over the terrace at Shaun Dickens Boathouse restaurant ruining the lovely wooden floor inside. They were frantically trying to pump out the water and limit the damage (photo below).
Thameside Road was closed yesterday due to the river overflowing onto the road. Police put in a diversion for traffic to go down Friday Street. This caused a massive knock on to the traffic coming over the bridge and through the town. While the river is high it’s still lower than the level reached in 2003 by about 6 inches. Hobbs Of Henley tweeted yesterday “It’s rising by the hour, pumping out as fast as we can.”
Perhaps the only thing that is enjoying the floods is the Ama Mermaid who is now truly in the water! The River & Rowing Museum was closed again for the second day yesterday. Vivien Connery though tweeted that the Chocolate Cafe on Thameside was still open for business.
Thank you to Dave Murray for taking these photos for the Henley Herald.
