Wallace Claims Top Honour at Senior Rugby Awards Dinner

11th-December-107The end of the autumn term brings another typically eventful Shiplake rugby season to a close. A record number of 296 pupils have represented the College this season, up from 280 last year. All teams across all year groups have experienced the ups and downs which are always associated with sport, but determination and team spirit has been evident throughout. Earlier this week, the Headmaster, players and teachers who have coached the teams came together for an Awards Dinner  to recognise and reward achievements this season.

After a fantastic meal provided by our wonderful catering team, Head of Rugby Mr Beckett provided an overview of the season. It was then the turn of each team captain to take centre stage and give a report on their side’s fortunes across the term. The highlight of the 1st XV’s season was undoubtedly the absorbing victory in Friday Night Lights vs. Merchant Taylors’ School. Harry Wallace was awarded the prestigious Player of the Year trophy, whilst club captain Alex Collis claimed Players’ Player. Credit should also go to the numerous Senior and U16 players who were awarded Shiplake Rugby Colours.

3rd XV Player of the Year Harry Marsden then undoubtedly stole the show with his entertaining account of the infamous series victory over Pangbourne College, complete with amusing analogies and anecdotes of 15-man lineouts and rucks. The 3rd XV, led by Mr Seccombe and Mr Howorth, claimed the Team of the Year award following a memorable campaign full of endeavour and commitment.

For the first time, our Sixth Form girls were also invited to the Rugby Dinner to celebrate the inaugural Touch Rugby season at the College. Although traditionally a summer sport, the girls have been working hard in training and earned a hard-fought victory over Waingels School in their first match.

It is sad to have to bid farewell to many exceptional players who will be leaving the College this summer, but they have set a great example for younger players to follow in future years. All our teams will be looking to build upon the foundations laid this season and move on to bigger and better things in 2014.
