College Students Learn From Amazon Experts

Over 200 students at The Henley College enjoyed a highly engaging lecture from two senior figures at online retailer Amazon on 13 November. Vice President of Consumables, Ajay Kavan, whose career in retail spans over two decades, was joined by Director of Merchant Services, Chris Poad in front of a capacity audience. The pair gave a unique insight into the story behind Amazon and its impressive growth, including a rarely seen clip of founder Jeff Bezos talking about his business strategy.

Introducing the talk was College student Hammod Munir, who the guests were delighted to see reading his notes via an Amazon Kindle device. Hammod also impressed talking about the small business he operates using Amazon’s online market place. Clare Forgie, Programme Leader for Business, Economics and Travel, said: ‘It was great to have senior representatives from such a high profile company as Amazon. Not only did they provide us with an insight into their business strategy but they gave really useful tips to students on how to get to potentially work for Amazon.’ Student John Clarke said: ‘The talk was most informative and gave a great insight into what working for a major company could be like. Ajay Kavan gave me some great feedback on a project I’m working on. He has helped me gain some new ideas to pursue.’

The next speaker at the College will be David Gill, former Chief Executive of Manchester United, on 5 March 2014.
