Henley College student Matt Maltese has received a South Oxfordshire Young Achievers Award in the arts.
A Level student Matt, who is in his second year of study, will be presented with the £250 prize at an awards ceremony in Benson on 4 December 2013. Awards are made by the District Council, who said: ‘Applicants must be able to show exceptional achievements in the twelve months prior to the closing date. They must be able to demonstrate a high level of commitment and skill in the chosen art form.’
Matt released his debut EP, ‘Further Than I Should’ back in April, a song that is now widely used in presentations about the College given in schools and at other events. Having released a demo of his song ‘Good Old Days’, at the age of 16, the track caught the attention of world-renowned fashion brand Burberry, and Matt was offered the chance to record the song for their Burberry Acoustic series.
Having grown up around music with an opera singer for a mother and a Jazz trumpeter for a grandfather, Matt started writing songs at 13 and hasn’t looked back. He said: ‘The Henley College has created some great opportunities for me, and singing with Rebecca Poole at our January concert in Henley was such a memorable experience. To meet like-minded musicians at the College has been fantastic, and to be in a supportive environment is really more than I could ask for.’
Matt, who plays live across the region on a weekly basis, is set to play at the renowned Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London on 26 November.
