Henley Ladies 1s 5 Oxford Ladies 1s 1

Scorers: Cleo Lyn, Esme Emmett, Ellie Roseff, Gem Barham, Serena Hickman

The Henley Ladies 1s added another 3 points to their league tally last Saturday when they travelled to Oxford for a decisive 5-1 victory.

On the back of what must have been their most effective warm-up of the season so far, the team went out strong and fast and immediately piled on the pressure with attacks emerging from all corners of the pitch. Nonetheless they also had to clean up a number of threatening breaks from an equally eager opposition, which made for an exciting first 15 minutes.

Henley took their lead when they made the most of an attacking short corner which saw Cleo Lyn firing the ball over the goal line. Esme Emmett then added to the score after she stole the ball off the Oxford defence and skipped round the ‘keeper to send the ball home. Another goal from open play came shortly before half time when the ball was worked up the pitch and crossed into the D to a waiting Ellie Roseff on the post, who slot it home.

Prepared for the Oxford side to start the second half determined to turn the tables, the Henley defence of Ruth Nutt, Georgie Metcalfe, Kat Green and Rach Herbert stepped up their game even further and quashed most threats before they reached the D. Nonetheless, Henley keeper Jen Sawyer was forced to make a number of exceptional saves much to the opposition’s frustration. However with Henley’s lead furthered by newcomer Gem Barham, the amber and blues lost their concentration for just a moment to allow for a free Oxford player to reverse the ball into the goal.

Following waves of attacks from a combination of the rotating forwards Serena Hickman, Katie Butler, Kiera Halloran, Lou England and Esme Emmett, the superb Henley performance was summed up with a final goal. Captain Rach Herbert clouted the ball past a number the Oxford players from a 16-yard hit-out to midfielder Cleo Lyn, who made a well-placed pass into the D for Hickman to pick up send the ball flying home, making it 5 goals from 5 different Henley players.
