Regional contractor Beard, which has offices at Cumnor Hill, Oxford, has been awarded a £1.2 million contract to upgrade and refurbish the Grade II-listed Grandstand at Phyllis Court Club in Henley-on-Thames.

Beard will create a new two-storey extension on the west elevation of the Grandstand and will completely refurbish the upper and lower viewing decks which overlook the Thames. The upper deck will also be enclosed to accommodate an additional banqueting or conference suite.

“We are delighted to be carrying out these significant improvements to the Phyllis Court Club Grandstand,” says John Youle, Construction Director for Beard Oxford. “Beard has extensive experience in this type of specialist refurbishment and we are looking forward to seeing the project take shape.”

The Grandstand was built as a viewing platform for Henley Royal Regatta. The design was modelled on an Oxford College Barge.

“It is vital to the Club Members that the renovation and refurbishment of this important and historic landmark is carried out in a sympathetic manner and to the highest possible standard, “ says Graham Owen, Phyllis Court Club Secretary. “Beard was chosen for its expertise and proven track record in executing projects where quality and sensitivity are the defining hallmarks. Phyllis Court Club is delighted to be associated with Beard (Oxford) Ltd for the realisation of this project.”

The project is due for completion in March next year.
