Henley 2s Men’s Hockey Team Still Unbeaten This Season

Henley 2s headed to Wallingford 2s on the back of an unbeaten start to the season.  Wallingford 2s would have been feeling confident after two successive promotions, victory over Henley in pre-season and an equally strong start: P2 W2.  Henley had the better of the opening exchanges forcing a number of errors and moving the ball quickly between midfield and attack, with some aerial assistance from Oscar at right back.  Wallingford took a while to get into the game, but soon proved adept at securing short corners, winning 5 in the first half alone.  Fortunately for Henley, Ryan Foggia in goal was in man-of-the-match form for the second week running, making several important saves.  Wallingford would probably have been happier with the half-time score, with Henley having missed a penalty flick courtesy of Chris Maidlow, Henley had a Lampard-esque goal not given after a ball-over-the-line dispute and there was a great passage of play where newcomer Andy had the keeper stranded, but James Wood’s shot into a keeper-less goal failed to pass the first line of defence.

The second half was a few minutes old when one of the opposition was shown a yellow card for a deliberate back stick.  The numerical advantage was short-lived however after a feisty captain’s tackle saw Alex Price receiving a similar reward from the umpire.  Henley continued to string some good passes together, with tireless running from the forwards, led by Guy Harmer, creating space behind the opposition defence.  As Henley legs tired, Wallingford kept their shape well, passed the ball around and whilst they had very few shots from open play, they continued to win short corners.  Fortunately a combination of bravery, good fortune and Ryan kept them at bay.   In the end, a hard fought 0-0 was probably a fair result for both sides.  Henley are scaling unheard of heights at 3rd in the league and are one of only two teams in 5 MBBO divisions yet to concede a goal.  The unbeaten record continues…

Henley: Ryan Foggoa, Ian Roberts, Rowan Austin, John Boumphrey, Oscar Wiseman, Alex Price, James Wood, Jeremy Hughes-Burne, Guy Harmer, Chris Maidlow, Jack Draycott, Andrew Mansfield, Terry Pollard
